I had an identity crisis this week...

There’s a question I’ve been sitting with this week:
What do I want to be known for?
This question came up after a call I had with the head of YouTube for a big creator. We were talking strategy - if I were to start a channel, what would my brand be? My positioning? What would I talk about for the next 10 years?
And the more I thought about it, the more I realized…
I had no f*cking clue.
Which frustrated me.
(And then I got frustrated that I was frustrated 😅).
And that little loop turned into a spiral: Who am I? What do I really want to do? What are my unique advantages? And how would I make a living from it?
Total identity crisis. All from one conversation.
So I texted a friend I trust. I asked him a vulnerable question:
“If I were to go all-in on my own thing, what would be my strengths? And more importantly… what are my blind spots?”
He responded with something I didn’t expect.
He said, “Jay, one of your biggest blind spots is your ambition.”
At first I was confused.
But he explained:
“You’re constantly thinking about the future - where you should go, what you should build next. But sometimes the best thing you can do for your future is to be fully present in your current season. What if you’re exactly where you need to be?”
That hit.
It reminded me of something Alex Hormozi once said:
“Patience is just figuring out what to do in the meantime.”
When I was filming with Alex, he casually mentioned that he keeps a “Big Ideas” list in the Notes app on his phone. Whenever he feels the urge to act on something immediately, he writes it down - but he doesn’t touch it for a week.
Only after a week does he look at it again.
And even then, he still doesn’t always act.
In the last 18 months, he’s only executed on three ideas from that list.
Each of those three has made him millions.
The moral of the story?
It’s not about doing the most things.
It’s about doing the right things.
It’s about leverage.
And often, the most leveraged move is… patience.
So if you’re feeling stuck or uncertain, and you feel like you should be planning or plotting or doing something.
Take a breath.
Sometimes, the best thing you can do is nothing.
Be where your feet are.
Until next week,
Jay “Be Patient” Yang
Ps. I recently had an incredible chat with my good friend Corey Wilks.
We talked about:
• The power of the Permissionless Approach
• How I landed a job with Noah Kagan in high school
• Why I dropped out of college (and what I’m up to now)
